Vietnam History
The Vietnam War began in 1957 and ended in 1975. Vietnam was separated into two main parts, North and South Vietnam. The North was communist and wanted to combine the two parts and the South wanted to remain free. From 1957 to 1965 it was just a stuggle between North and South Vietnam and the first U.S troops entered in March of 1965. Two thirds of the men were voulnteers not drafted. One out of every ten American soldiers who served in Vietnam was a casualty. In total 58,169 soldiers were killed in Vietnam.
In 1973 a cease fire was ordered and the last ground troops left Vietnam that year. However the fighting between the North and South continued. The war officially ended on April 30, 1975. The war was very unpopular with the U.S. When the Soldiers arrived home they were treated poorly. For example for their own safety they couldn't wear their uniforms out in public, they were spit on and they were called names such as "baby killer".
In this project we hope to make people aware of the Vietnam War and make sure that people know the brave men that served.
